Founder of IMA Movement, Duran Bowie, has committed himself to helping the community the past 10 years since starting his nonprofit in Los Angeles,Calif. During the pandemic, Duran still managed to help those in need. He hosted a thanksgiving event, held at Rogers Park that fed over 100 people in the area. Later that day, he passed out more meals to the citizens on skid row. During Christmas season, he drove around the city of Los Angeles and Inglewood to personally handed out gifts to over 1,000 kids. The event lasted 4 days and Bowie spent countless hours making sure the kids had a good Christmas.

In late January, Bowie announced his virtual tutoring program that he’s offering to kids in elementary to high school level. Bowie mentioned that the non profit will also be giving students one hundred and fifty dollars for attending zoom meetings and completing homework.

The program ran by the nonprofit is called, “No Mind Left Behind.” Duran mentioned why he named the program that by stating, “The reason why it is called “No Mind Left Behind” is because after we assess our students, they are usually 2–3 grade levels behind the actual grade level that they are in. With these tutoring sessions, we want to pick their minds up and instill in them that they are elevated and not inferior towards the education system. Doing this will make them feel like champions and more confident when facing school head on. Providing additional help to our students will allow them to feel a part of their community and hopefully lessen the likelihood of them tearing apart from their community. This is more than a tutoring opportunity, we aim to mentor them and guide them, letting them know that their community cares, sees and hears them.”

Duran said by doing this, he aims at helping parents as well, “We will be filling in the gap for parents who aren’t able to assist their child in certain curriculums. We come in at a free price point!” This is different from most tutoring programs because typically tutoring services are expensive and not easy to book for all students. Duran hopes to benefit the whole family, from the kids going to tutoring, to the parents helping their kids get into this tutoring program. Duran final words on the tutoring program was, ‘Tutoring in the community doesn’t only bring knowledge and education to our children, but it will create a domino effect in the community. The stronger one student feels, will cause them to want to be a blessing in the next student’s life academically, socially and emotionally. Overall, this is an opportunity you or your child do not want to miss out on!”
